The last maple leaf left on the tree; praying it would stay there
until I had completed taking the photograph. Photographed at Westonbirt
arboretum on a sunny afternoon in November 1999 using a combination of differential
focus and a long lens to blur the sunlight highlights in the background into
aesthetically pleasing patterns of light & shade. The addition
of a very thin smear of petroleum jelly on an old lens filter complements
the composition by generating a flare from the leaf. The final and most important
element is the way in which the tortuous shape of the highlighted twig to
which the leaf is attached leads the eye around the image, finally coming
to rest on the leaf gloriously coloured leaf itself. Photographed
pre digitally with an Olympus OM2 in combination with a 70mm - 200mm lens
onto the classic Fujichrome Vulva 50ASA slide film. Stuart Hewins DPAGB |
