Featuring the pan tiled roofs
of Whitby on North Yorkshire with the use of the solarisation technique to
break them down into a series of interesting contour shapes & lines.
Actually there are three levels of solarisation in the image, each
one lighter in tone than the other moving from the heaviest at the front
to the lightest at the rear; this arrangement giving depth to the composition.
The three levels were then manually montaged & finally re-photographed
onto traditional black & white film. Although nowadays such effects
can be done much quicker & easier using digital techniques they cannot
achieve the subtleties & aesthetic appeal of the natural wet darkroom
process. Stuart Hewins DPAGB |
